`"EIGHTY and OVER" My husband, Barry Shaffer is a professional photographer. I work as an
MFT in the field of geriatrics. We are working together on a photography project, "Eighty
and Over." The project is comprised of seniors over the age of 80 that represent all of
the diverse cultures and lands that make up the population of Los Angeles. Friends,
family as well as Laura Trejo, the director of the Department of Aging in Los Angeles,
 have all been helpful in
introducing us to willing participants to be photographed and interviewed. If you know
anyone in the your community who is over 80, articulate, and preferably speaks English
(otherwise we would need a translator), we would love the opportunity to meet and with
permission, include them in this wonderful project. "Eighty and Over tells the story
of Old Age and it's meaning. Los Angeles, home to the nation's most culturally diverse
geriatric population with over one million people, is an astonishing array of cultural,
ethnic and national backgrounds. Los Angeles represents the world in microcosm. By
interviewing our subjects during photo shoots, we hope to not only capture the beauty
of old age in imagery, but to also record their personal stories and collective wisdom.
The photography exhibit will combine the subject's words and image creating a deep
and unique personal bond with viewers, encouraging conversation, and the examination
of the viewer's
own life, values, and aging. The exhibit will comprise thirty to forty compelling
archival silver-gelatinous black and white prints, loosely mirroring the demographics
of Los Angeles. The images well be museum quality, framed, sized approximately 40"by50"
to be hung quality framed, with appropriate gallery space and lighting. The power of
photography comes from the response to the "photo." It is a vehicle for people to discuss
issues and to feel things. It provides space for the viewer to contemplate. That is why
photography can be such an intimate art. Please note that this is exhibit is not for
profit. There is no money to be exchanged with any of the participants. We look forward
to hearing from you. I invite you to visit my web-site listed below.
