| Luis trained and started his professional acting career on stage in New York with the Broadway terms production of “Don Quixote of La Mancha” (apparently his accent and look made him the perfect Spanish priest… ironic). After touring and performing on stages around USA he decided to make LA his new home in April 2003. On the big screen, Luis major credits consist of over 30 movies including “Weapon of Mass Destruction” (Asahi TV) and “The Yearbook” which received the Best Picture award on the 2005 Chicago International Really Short Film Festival.
On TV, you will see Luis from September 2006 onwards as a Series Regular on KLSC on the upcoming sitcom “English for Success“. |

Christopher Dinh starting his acting career at UCLA, not as a theatre major, but as a Biology major with his sights fixed on Med School.
While working at a coffee shop on campus, he was befriended by a theatre professor who talked him into taking his first theater class. He continued to take acting classes at UCLA and at East West Players in Downtown sporadically throughout college and eventually found himself involved in independent films both in front of and behind the camera. |

| Eric would like to thank Ron and Kris for casting him in this charming picture. First reared on the stage in his hometown of Nashville, Tn, Eric set off for NYU to continue his creative journey. After spending a semester there, or what Eric likes to call lunch, he found a suitable nest in the Theatre department at the University of Alabama.
Since that time he has been flailing in the confines of relative obscurity and profound indentured servitude that is the city of Angeles. |

I’m originally from Santa Cruz and I’ve been in LA for almost 3 years. I trained as a classical violinist for many years before I decided to pursue acting seriously. My mother is Korean, my father is a Caucasian mix (Irish, Scottish, French). I am fluent in Korean, although my Mom begs to differ!
Currently I am studying at The Acting Corps with artistic director Eugene Buica. I have recently done many student films, indie shorts, and am currently filming the indie feature Hard 2 Play. Now that I have that experience under my belt, I feel ready to enter the “real” world. I have a manager, and meetings with theatrical and commercial agents on the horizon. I hope to have representation in both arenas in the next few weeks. Basically, I am hustling… and it’s working!

Sara Malakul Lane
February 26, 2007

![]() |
![]()
HERS is a face that can launch a thousand cards.
Last year, Sara Malakul Lane anchored one of Citibank’s advertising campaigns here and added a touch of royalty to the modelling scene in Singapore.
The 24-year-old pan-Asian model is a descendant of the Thai royal family. She’s also a well-known personality in the high-fashion and entertainment circles in Thailand.
![]() |
Think Scottish supermodel Stella Tennant, who is the grand-daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.
Sara’s not the only one who is looking to make her base here.
Singapore has become a hot spot for foreign pan-Asian models-turned-hosts hoping to break into the regional market, say local modelling agencies The New Paper on Sunday spoke to.
According to Mr Calvin Cheng, whose agency Looque Models is managing the Thai model/actress in Singapore, Sara is also hoping for hosting jobs to swing her way here.
Speaking about her move to Singapore in the coming months, Sara told The New Paper on Sunday: ‘I wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to find work here at all. Singapore is the place to be in Asia as the fashion and entertainment industries are thriving.
‘Singapore is also the place where pan-Asian models are in demand.’
You may imagine she would be imperious, but the friendly model surprises you with her schoolgirl charm.
Tell Sara that this is not what one would expect from a member of the fashion royalty or aristocracy, and she quickly dismissed the notion in a crisp British accent: ‘Sure, I may have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but I was brought up without any royal treatment.
‘I’m no different from any working professional. Every model has to go for castings or auditions if she wants the job.’
The second of three children aged from 17 to 25, Sara was born in Guam to an English corporate executive and a Thai descendent of the royal family.
Her mother, Madam Tuptim Malakul Na Ayuthaya, 53, is a descendent of King Rama II. He was the King of Siam between 1809 and 1824.
Madam Malakul’s great-great grandfather was HRH (His Royal Highness) Prince Mahamala, who is the son of King Rama II.
Her great grandfather served as the King’s Grand Master of Ceremonies and her grandfather was the Minister of the Royal Court. As for her father, he was the Thai ambassasdor to the UK.
‘Na Ayuthaya’ is the last royal title which includes ‘HRH’, ‘HSH’ (His Serene Highness) and ‘HH’ (His Highness).
MARRIED FOR LOVE
But Sara is not a princess.
She said: ‘My mum married a commoner. My parents’ love story was talked about in Thailand those days. Then, my mother’s family had made arrangements for her to marry a prince. But she called off the engagement.
‘Six months later, she met my father on a blind date and they fell in love. Because there was so much talk about my mum not marrying a royal and breaking off the engagement, they moved to Guam after they got married.’
And home for the Lanes is not a grand manor in Thailand, but a humble four-bedroom apartment in Bangkok.
But they do have another property in England – a Victorian-style mansion near Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, which Sara’s parents bought from former Arsenal footballer Niall Quinn.
Sara started modelling in Thailand at the age of 14.
She says that her uncle and media mongul, Mr Piya Malakul Na Ayuthaya, gave her a headstart in the fashion business. He owns Pacific Intercommunications, which publishes a stable of magazines that include Cosmopolitan.
But her identity has sometimes worked against her in the modelling industry.
She said: ‘There is a certain degree of jealousy from others because of my background. People tend to judge me, assuming that I’m proud or arrogant. For example, they may not be as friendly when I first meet them. Or they keep a distance.
‘But I work just as hard for my jobs, going for auditions like any other model would.’
Mr Cheng, who has known Sara for five years, said that she is no prima donna.
‘She has achieved success and financial independence at a young age, but she is still the girl next door. Deep down, she’s very Thai. No airs, no attitude,’ he said.
![]() |
In the last decade, the Eurasian beauty has graced countless magazine covers, modelled in Europe, and has endorsed beauty products, luxury cars and timepieces.
Though she declined to reveal how much she makes annually, Sara would only say that ‘one can make a lot of money if a model can appeal to the masses’.
Besides Thailand, her face can been seen in TV commercials in India and Taiwan. She has also starred in several Thai movies and dramas.
In 2003, she landed a part in a Hollywood movie, Belly Of The Beast, playing actor Steven Seagal’s daughter.
She recalled: ‘It was a competitive audition in Bangkok. There were hundreds of girls from Hong Kong, China and Indonesia who were vying for the part. I received three calls before I got the role.’
Asked of her experience working with the American actor, she said: ‘Well, I won’t say he’s the most friendly guy around. He’s quite intimidating. I didn’t speak much to him.
‘Though he isn’t an A-lister, I understand he makes US$4 million ($6m) per movie. During filming, he had a huge entourage which included a chef.’
Having auditioned for several roles in Los Angeles, Sara said her Hollywood experience opened her eyes to the harsh reality of the entertainment business.
‘There are many good actors, but they are struggling. It’s unpleasant to see the flip side of showbusiness.
‘Everyone is just waiting for that break. Or experience.
‘I guess it’s the same reason I want to be in Singapore to explore the modelling and acting opportunities, regardless of how big or small the roles are.’
She says she is very proud of her friend, MTV VJ Utt Panichku, who has gone into acting and presenting TV programmes in Singapore. However, Sara intends to keep her move here a low-profile one.
‘Oh no, I don’t have an entourage of cooks, wardrobe assistants or makeup artists. My mum goes along with me on my overseas trips to lend moral support,’ she said with a laugh.
The bachelorette said her mother will accompany her to Singapore.
Before returning to Thailand at 14, Sara spent seven years in an English boarding school.
Her father, Mr Alastair Lane, didn’t like the idea of his only daughter becoming a model initially, but he relented on the condition that her mother would accompany her on her overseas assignments.
Asked if Madam Malakul would want her daughter to marry a royalty, she said via an e-mail: ‘I firmly believe that a marriage should stem from true love. So it doesn’t really matter where he is from. It’s not relevant.’
Sara agrees. What’s much more important for this regal beauty are wit, intelligence and humour.

| Meet the spunky actress…Kathy Uyen. | ![]() |

| Written by Nathan Pham | |
| Tuesday, 30 January 2007 | |
On top of being pretty, passionate, and determined, Kathy Uyen is also very lucky to receive full support from her parents, right from the start of her acting career. Knowing that not too many people have what she has, she cherishes and seizes every opportunity that comes her way. That’s why within a couple of years, she has already appeared in numerous commercials and six independent movies. And the momentum in finding ‘that big break’ is swaying in her favor due to her very spunky, optimistic, and ‘go get it tiger’ attitude.Despite her busy schedule for 2007, Kathy has genuinely taken the time to chat with VAN. Here are the highlights. Enjoy!
(Photo by: Shane Sato : www.shanesato.com) This is how it all began… VAN: Were you born in the states? If not, when did you and your family come to the states? Kathy: I was born in San Jose, California. My parents came over in 1979. VAN: Any siblings? If so, are they in the same field? Kathy: Yes, one younger sister. She is studying for her masters in Speech Therapy. I’m very proud of her. “One actress is plenty enough,” said my very relieved dad. VAN: (smiling) I agree. I learned that you fell in love with acting after a play in 5th grade, what was the play? And then when and how did you know, “ok.. that’s it! Acting is what I will be doing for the rest of my life..”? Kathy: It was a play about different animals in the forest. I played a mouse, and wore a black leotard with black tights, and a little tail. That was my first time performing. Then in middle school, I joined volleyball and basketball and after being a benchwarmer for quite some time, I realized I wasn’t going to be an athlete, so I returned back to acting, and started doing lots of plays and musicals in high school. In college I started auditioning a lot more and doing tons and tons of student films, and indie films. When I graduated college, I finally swallowed my desire to be financially stable, gave into my passion and accepted the odds of becoming a working actress. VAN: (Hehehe…) I know how that feel! I used to be a benchwarmer for 10th grade basketball. As a Vietnamese-American, I’m pretty sure your parents didn’t expect you to be in the film industry. How difficult was it to explain and convince your parents that you are doing the right thing for your future? Kathy: They were pretty supportive from the very beginning. In high school, my dad would take days off from work to drive me to auditions in San Francisco. After I didn’t book any work, my dad tried to convince me to explore other types of career. I think they though it was a phase I was going through. After doing Spirits, a Vietnamese film by Victor Vu, they started realizing I was serious. And they’ve been very supportive and understanding about it ever since. VAN: You are very lucky then. Not that many Vietnamese parents are supportive in that way. Snapshots of Kathy’s works… (Photo by: Katie Luong : www.capturedbykatie.com)
VAN: Tell us a little bit on how you got your feet wet in this cut-throat industry. Kathy: Started with lots of plays, student films, extra work, local commercials, acting classes, etc…pretty much anything I could get my hands on. VAN: I learned that you did numerous commercials before doing films. How did you land your first commercial? Was the casting process super competitive? How was the experience? Kathy: First you need to get commercial agent that will represent you and send you out on auditions. After that you pretty much show up to auditions and do whatever they ask. Commercials usually vary in the level of acting required. Some parts require no acting, but just standing there, in which case it’s all about your looks. Some require you to just scream, or dance or sing, etc. etc… And some require a lot of dialogue. Commercials usually require no prior preparation as opposed to theatrical auditions for film and TV that depend heavily on your acting ability to deliver the prepared pages of the script. Commercial auditions are no-brainers. You just show up, have a good energy, be pleasant to work with, and have fun! VAN: How about your first leading role? What was the movie? How was the experience? Kathy: My first leading role was in playing Hoa in Victor Vu’s Spirits (www.SpiritsTheMovie.com / www.EnvisionMediaGroup.org). It was a great first time experience, the cast and crew became a big Vietnamese family away from home. VAN: So far, you have done about 6 movies, ranging from drama to comedy. Which category/style do you enjoy doing the most? Kathy: I started doing drama first, and lately have been focusing more on comedy. I want to do Asian American/Vietnamese American roles that require more spunk, energy, attitude, charm, and voice, which mostly falls in the comedy category. I love drama, don’t get me wrong, but for now that’s my current focus. (Photo from Spirits, www.SpiritsTheMovie.com)
VAN: Which one of the 6 movies is the most unforgettable one? And why? Kathy: Oh dear. It’s one of those. You have 6 kids. Who do you love the most….kind of question. The answer is…I can’t just pick one!!! Honestly, each film has been a valuable experience, and after each film, I take on a bit of the character with me. Acting has given me a way to open up my perspective to try on new roles and characters and take on stronger traits for myself in the end. VAN: “On the Rocks” is an independent movie about a generation gap of a Korean family. I find it interesting to see you play the leading role as the Korean daughter that rebels against her mother. How did you end up with this role? Did you have do research on Korean culture prior to the shoot? Kathy: Well, James Kyson Lee (bless his kind hearted soul) he’s the one that clued me in on the casting for the film, and I read and got in. There wasn’t too much research that had to be done. Some of the themes are pretty apparent across the board. The role is that of a Korean American. Although she is Korean, she speaks English, and has assimilated to most American culture and traditions. She want to follow her dreams to become a artist, and design jewelry, however her mother is insistent on her following the traditional ladder of success, i.e doctor and lawyer. There’s the common conflict many Asian American families have, the generation gap of two ideals of happiness and success. VAN: Do you feel the Korean generation gap is similar to what we have in our Vietnamese culture? Kathy: Yes and no. In the this case of the story, yes it is similar to a Vietnamese generation gap between the generation that is born here and the older generation that has sacrificed a lot to be here. There is a huge misunderstanding, and when dealt with in a passive aggressive way, it can lead to much resentment and result in the daughter being extremely rebellious, while the mother is more sadden and indifferent to her daughters’ wishes. (Photo from: www.asianstoriesmovie.com)
VAN: Almost everyone in the entertainment industry started their career out with a lot of big dreams and hopes, how about you? What were those dreams and hopes of yours? Kathy: Yes. I had a lot of big dreams and hopes. When I was 18, I wrote them down on a piece of paper one day when this horrible wannabe producer tried to pretend to have faith in me. Yes. I am not lying. There are mean disgusting people out there. But he did make me write down all my dreams and goals. I remember laughing my ass off because of how far fetched and ridiculous these goals were. Years went by, and I forgot about that piece of paper. But I guess it stayed in the back of my subconscious, because 6 years later, I found it, and low and behold I had accomplished a lot of those goals. I had wanted to start my own TV show. I had wanted to play leading roles in feature films. I wanted to do commercials. I wanted to do plays and get involved in the Asian American film festival scene. I wanted to win an Oscars. Wait…I guess I haven’t done that yet. Oh well, something to look forward to in the next ten years? But yes. I do feel you can really do anything if you set your mind and heart to it, and cut all the negative energy in your life. The road ahead for Kathy… VAN: Now that you have gone through a set of movies and got a taste of the industry, are those dreams and hopes still the same? Has your perspective changed? Kathy: My focus now is to be the greatest actress I can be. Art imitates life they say. So I have to be the greatest most interesting person I can possibly be. My goals are to be studying, learning, and absorbing any information that remotely interesting or pleasant. So that I can incorporate those into my work. Being nice to people. Being mean to people. Yes, I was always told I was toooo nice. And sometimes, too nice is too boring. A girl’s gotta have a little spice and sizzle right? VAN: How do feel about the road ahead? Any word of advice for those newcomers to the industry? Kathy: I feel positive and I feel more focused than ever. Advice. Ummm… Write your goals down. Learn as much as you can about acting. Get as much experience as you can. Have fun. Stay away from negative people. Dream big, but dream real. It’s not going to be an overnight success. Gotta work hard, gotta hustle!!!!! (Photo from www.skidmarksthemovie.com)
VAN: From your schedule, you have 3 movies will be released in 2007, Skid Marks, King of Hollywood, and Finishing the Game. That means your shooting schedule must have been quite busy in 2006. So what’s cooking for 2007? ;o) Kathy: What’s cooking for 2007? Well, it’s January 16th. The past few 16 days, I haven’t shot any movies yet. But have been aggressively auditioning. I’m hoping to reel one in soon!!! Let’s cross our fingers! VAN: Before I let you go, like every other artist on VAN, you have to answer the 2 questions. The first one is: What is your take on the meaning of life? Kathy: Meaning of life is to be happy. According to Da lai Lama, it’s all your mind and your positive outlook on life. So therefore, the meaning is life is within u. whohooo!!! VAN: The last one is: Pho or Hu Tieu? Kathy: Oh. I love pho. Pho sure. Pho tai is good, so is Pho ga. I like the broth and the basil leaves. I want some now. VAN: Hehehe.. If you want some “really” good Pho, you just have to go back to Vietnam. So good and cheap there. The Pho here is good too, but it’s a little westernized kind of pho. ;o) Thank you Kathy for taking the time to share your insights with us. We wish you the best of luck. Hope to see you in the big screen soon. I get pretty hyped up whenever I meet a Vietnamese-American artist that is so determined and focused. They just assure me that we’re one step closer to seeing a Vietnamese artist that becomes an international superstar. That’s all for now! Cheers. P.S. I came to the U.S. at 5, and lived with my mom. My parents had divorced already, and my brother lived with my dad, while I was to live with my mom. Alright, I think this is all getting too boring. So I’m going to jump ahead to high school. I loved high school! The first two years weren’t too great though, because my mom was Very strict. I was only allowed to talk on the phone one hour a day, and that was the worst because that’s all a 15 year old girl wants to do! I could only go out one day out of the weekend and my curfew was like 10 PM or something. I felt like I was in jail. I couldn’t sleep over at friends’ houses or go over to their houses after school.. nothing! After much suffocation of being trapped at home, with no Internet and no phone usage, I found other ways to use my time. I decided to become more involved in school. After all, colleges do love it! haha But that wasn’t the only reason I involved myself in the extracurricular activities. I became the Treasurer of Chinese Culture Club and applied to be in the student government. Next thing I knew, I was the Co-Commissioner of Academics. Sounds nerdy, huh!
My partner and I’s job was to promote Academics in our school by providing incentives to those who get good grades and to those who improve academically. We went around to businesses in our community and asked for discounts for our students who achieved in academics. It was actually a lot of fun. We were also in charge of putting together a pep rally to honor the students! Cool huh. haha
My mom was still strict, but let me go out to do the “school stuff”. The year after, I became the Vice President of the school and the President of Chinese Culture Club. Wow, mucho nerd. Don’t worry, I wasn’t just one of those “school is my life” people, I still had friends! haha.
I got sick of the life I had at home. My mom was way too strict. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I hated not being able to do what I wanted to do. I was always very independent, and because of that, all those rules and regulations made me feel trapped. When my mom stopped giving me allowance (those were the good times!), I decided to just rebel. After all, I had nothing to lose! So I just went out whenever I wanted, came back whenever I wanted, sometimes not coming home at all. She was Pissed for a while, but she couldn’t do anything about it. I just didn’t listen and didn’t care anymore. I could block out all the yelling and anger, and just leave.
Life was great being able to do as I pleased. But I needed money. I worked in the Student Store at school during brunch and lunch, tutored after school, and worked at Red Lobster on the weekends. There went my social life! After my mom broke up with her boyfriend who lived with us, she started going out almost every night with her friends. No more dinner at home! So basically, other than the room she provided me to sleep in, I was on my own. Everything that I wanted and/or needed, whether it be clothes, food, school stuff, anything, I had to buy on my own. It was hard, but I lived.
Now comes college. I went to UCLA for Economics (because you know, us Asians gotta have that “safe” degree). I hated school, but loved UCLA. I’m extremely proud of our football and basketball teams. (*update* On 12.02.06 UCLA upsets USC 13-9. Best game Ever.) GO BRUINS!!!
I was introduced to acting in high school. I took a drama class and fell in love. Although this industry is rough.. it’s where my heart lies. So why do I want to be an actor? I love stories. I always get waaay into the characters in films or TV shows. For the 2 hours or the half hour.. I’m living their lives. When they’re happy, I’m happy. When they’re sad, I cry too. I love that these stories on screen can create such great emotion in the audience. I would love to be a part of that.. to give to the world what the screen has given me.. Is that a stupid reason?
This brings us to the present. This was a brief autobio.. so if there’s anything you’d like to know about me, just email me. Thanks for reading!!

Enjoy!
