TALKING BASEBALL WITH KURT SUZUKI
Hyphen correspondent Jesse Zitrin had a chance to catch up with the A’s Hawai’ian-born rookie catcher, Kurt Suzuki, on the field before a game against the Chicago White Sox. Suzuki’s 2-run home run the previous day, with Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums in attendance, had been the difference in the A’s victory. Hours later, Suzuki would finish the evening with a tenth-inning, three-run home run to win another game for the A’s.
A month earlier, iron man catcher Jason Kendall was traded to the Chicago Cubs, paving the way for Kurt to become the A’s new starting catcher. Kurt first spoke with Hyphen’s Julia Chang as a member of the Stockton Ports, for Hyphen’s Body Issue in 2005. Read more at the Hyphen blog

ARE YOU AN ARTIST? DRAW ME!
Do you doodle your way through meetings? Gather old shoes off the street for a found objects piece? Throw paint in ways that would make Pollack jealous? Anger your loved ones for never finding that right outlet for others to appreciate your work? Well, we at Hyphen appreciate you. Actually, we’ll take it a step further Uncle Sam-style and say, “We want you!” We’re looking for some new artists to illustrate articles with paintings, cartoons, collages, mixed media, etc. OK, we can’t afford you compensate you monetarily (we wish we were paid, too!), but it’s great exposure in a national magazine! Please email erica@hyphenmagazine with samples or a link to an online portfolio.
