HA NOI — HCM City Literature and Arts Publishing House will release the first nude photography book by a Vietnamese photographer later this month.

The book, titled Xuan Thi (Springtime), consists of more than 70 nudes by professional photographer Thai Phien.

“This is a result of fifteen years of dealing with nude photos, a rather challenging and difficult experience because it is not easy for me and my models to find an appropriate place to take photographs… And the art is so controversial in Viet Nam,” Phien said.

“Sometimes I’ve considered quitting the profession. But I have stuck with it.”

Phien was born in 1960 in the central city of Hue. He has worked as a photographer since 1992. Apart from nudes, he also engages with news items and landscapes.

He has received 46 domestic and international prizes and has 300 photos displayed at various exhibitions in 60 nations and territories around the world. His two works, namely Xuan Thi and Loi Ve (The Way Home), are now on show at Spain’s Museum of International Photography.

Phien is a member of the Viet Nam Association of Photographic Artists and the International Federation of Photographic Art. His name has been listed in Who’s Who by the Photographic Society of America.

Nearly 50 of his photos will be displayed in a solo nude photo exhibition, the first of its kind in Ha Noi, scheduled to open early next year. — VNS
